British Airways can charge over 2,600 times more for the base airfare for the same Economy class seat. Notice how all the other taxes and charges stay exactly the same?

This is also why airlines like British Airways can't sell seats for much less than £362 (there's not much airfare left to discount) and why extras often cost so much.

Carrier surcharges are flat rates by travel class for fuel (like splitting petrol money for a 6,900 mile roundtrip). Taxes like UK Air Passenger Duty and US customs fees are unavoidable too.

This shows the secret to finding cheap flights to New York. It's all about reducing the base airfare to 50p each way, or as close as possible.

Airlines raise airfares from their lowest sale rates when they expect to fill their flights

Base airfares increase. Fewer highly discounted tickets are available, or they sell out quickly. Most travellers end up spending more on their tickets. But we see peak prices as the signal you just have to search a bit harder...

Flight search is a game

Some win. Most don't. Not because they don't try. But because they don't know the rules.

us flag

Every time you book a flight from London to New York, you're playing the game. 7 airlines compete on this route, each setting their own airfares and rules.

You, the plucky traveller, search your way through (probably) 50 different tabs and a headache. You never get to see these rules of the game. But you can still spend as much as a sofa for the same Economy class seat.

Double jeopardy for UK travellers: all players start on an island. Flying is the only practical way to get to New York. You're playing whether you like it or not.

The secret to flight search? Search widely.

Find the fare rules that work for your trip, without paying over the odds

  • Different airlines
  • Different dates
  • Different routes
  • Different ticket types
  • Different travel sites

But don't search randomly. The strategies below will help you decode airline pricing rules for London to New York. That's how you find fares in the £300-450 range consistently, even at peak times.

Why this search works

London to New York is dominated by three airline alliances: British Airways & American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic & Delta Airlines, and United Airlines. Each of these network airlines typically price with restricted return tickets. Thankfully, there is now healthy competition.

New York-based JetBlue and long haul low-cost Norse Atlantic Airways sell flights with one-way pricing. This means the big three alliances have to price match, certainly for tickets from New York. Fares can be as low as £100 one-way from New York to London, even on BA.

By breaking the roundtrip into two one-way tickets, you can often access these lower airfares that aren't available in a standard roundtrip ticket.

2

Throwaway return + one-way back

The cheapest return tickets often require a longer stay over a weekend at least, then add a one-way back on your actual preferred date. Combined cost beats expensive short roundtrip pricing.

Best for:

  • Short long haul trips

  • Business travel dates (Monday-Thursday or similar)

  • When return fares appear more expensive than normal

  • Flexible travellers who can book two separate tickets

  • Routes where prices differ significantly by direction

Why this search works

This works similarly to combining two one-ways. However, the cheapest long haul flights that airlines will sell are highly restricted return tickets, typically with a Saturday night stay rule.

Airlines know business travellers won't typically stay for the weekend, but price-sensitive leisure travellers will. Leisure travel is a huge proportion of the London to New York market, and airlines with up to 11 flights a day to fill need to be competitive. This gives you rates that are often cheaper than an outbound one-way.

To complete the trip, you can book your separate return (typically very cheap from New York to London) as the market rate is lower and there is no UK Air Passenger Duty due.

3

Stay over the weekend

Adding a Saturday night stay unlocks cheaper roundtrip airfares. Airlines know most business travellers will pay more and won't stay over the weekend, but price-sensitive leisure travellers do.

Best for:

  • Short long haul trips that could extend or combine with a visit elsewhere

  • Business travel dates (Monday-Thursday or similar)

  • Premium cabins (Business, First, Premium Economy)

  • Travellers who can buy tickets in advance

  • Flexible travellers who can add 1-2 extra nights away for a more relaxed trip

Why this search works

The cheapest airfares are typically restricted roundtrip fares. These typically require a Saturday night stay to make them unattractive to business travellers. If your trip is flexible enough to fly out the Saturday before (and de-jetlag in Central Park) or fly back the Sunday after, you can save a huge amount on your flights.

Granted, you may spend more staying a few extra nights but the difference in airfare more than offsets it. You don't have to stay in the middle of Manhattan either.

Why this search works

You never know unless you look. Cheaper economy class tickets can sell out faster than premium cabins and create these tempting upgrade opportunities.

Low-cost long-haul carriers like Norse Atlantic and JetBlue offer premium cabins at prices that often undercut legacy carriers' economy fares.

Why this search works

Airlines have access to hotel inventory at wholesale "bed bank" rates and can bundle flights with accommodation at prices that often undercut booking separately. British Airways Holidays and Virgin Atlantic Holidays are particularly strong for New York packages.

The savings can be substantial, especially on mid-range Manhattan hotels. You'll lose the ability to earn hotel loyalty points, but the cash savings typically outweigh this. Plus you get ATOL protection and can still collect airline miles and tier points.

Self connect via Europe

Long haul flights from other European hubs can be much cheaper than UK departures due to competition, not paying UK/London rates, and avoiding UK Air Passenger Duty long haul rates. Position yourself with a cheap separate flight (could be on a low-cost airline) with plenty of time to self-connect.

Best for:

  • Long haul flights outside of offpeak times

  • Long haul flights in premium cabins (Business, First, Premium Economy)

  • Flexible travellers who can self-connect and re-check bags

  • Couples, families, or any groups where savings made are multiplied by each traveller

  • Anyone willing to give themselves 3+ hours or overnight between flights

  • 2-for-1 trips: visit another European city and save money on the way

Why this search works

European hubs like Paris and Frankfurt are home to low-cost long-haul carriers that compete aggressively on price. By positioning yourself to one of these hubs on a cheap short-haul flight, you can access these fares.

The trade-off is connection time and the need to re-check bags (since you're on separate tickets with no interline agreement). But with proper planning and allowing enough connection time, the substantial savings make this strategy worthwhile for price-conscious travellers.

Twin seats mean you're far less likely to get stuck next to a stranger in Economy. There's less reason to pay for seat selection.

Fly the dayflight back

Sleep in a proper bed and fly during the day. The flights are typically in the air for only 6 hours. Would you prefer a short nights sleep on plane or a full night in a bed?

Beat the traffic

Avoid New York rush hour traffic to the airport

Most evening flights back to London mean travelling out during New York rush hour. Consider a later flight or head to the airport earlier. Uber helicoptor is also a similar price to a peak-time Uber ride.

Skip the queues

US preclearance and border clearance

US immigration queues are usually long. Consider flying via Ireland or Canada where you can pass US preclearance during your connection, or registering for Global Entry.

Airlines can get you excellent flight + hotel deals. Save on both flights and downtown hotels.

Seatmap lottery

Book flights with twin seat layouts

About 1 in 3 flights from London have twin seat layouts. You can reliably find these by looking for specific aircraft types:

A330s have a 2-4-2 Economy configuration, flown by most Delta and some Virgin Atlantic flights. Watch out for aircraft swaps though.

767s have a 2-3-2 Economy configuration, flown by almost all United flights.

You can also find twin seats on the rear of some 777s (British Airways and American Airlines) where the cabin tapers from 3-4-3 to 2-4-2, but these prized seats usually come with a premium. Why not get it for free by booking a different type of aircraft?

Defy jetlag

Fly the dayflight back

Flights back from New York to London are in the air for a little over 6 hours. By the time drinks, dinner & breakfast service is complete in the cabin, there's less than 4 hours left for undisturbed rest. In business class, you could dine in the lounge and sleep from seatbelt off to back on again (best case: 5 hours 30 minutes undistrubed), but even then you're fighting sleep deprivation until the evening.

Defy jetlag with dayflights. Start and end the day in a proper bed. It's far easier to snap back into the British timezone when arriving in the evening. Plus, modern WiFi-equipped planes means you don't necessarily lose a day's productivity either.

Flights typically take off from New York around 8am and arrive around 8pm in London. The early start helps with re-adjustment to the earlier British timezone, and is still better for sleep hours than any seat or suite on a plane.

Look out for British Airways, American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue, and United Airlines.

Best value: Virgin Atlantic VS26 JFK-LHR. Virgin offers a more generous service on this short dayflight with a decent breakfast and then a hot dinner before landing. Most other airlines offer a breakfast with a small snack before landing, forgetting most dining options will be closed by the time they get into London after landing.

Virgin Premium Economy is also a particularly good option on this flight. Save forking out for business class for another trip, particularly if you're going to be back in a real bed sooner.

Best views

Window seats on the right side offer the best views of the New York skyline as you approach. Flights tend to follow coast along Long Island then turn in.

Beat the traffic

Avoid New York rush hour traffic to the airport

New York airports aren't as well connected as London airports. Most evening flights back to London depart between 8pm and 10pm, which means you'll be travelling out during rush hour traffic if you leave Manhattan in the late afternoon. This affects both JFK and Newark.

Consider these options: Book a later flight and enjoy the early evening in the city, or make your way to the airport earlier in the day and relax in the airport lounges.

If your budget stretches that far, helicopter transfers can zip you over the traffic entirely. When travelling alone, the price difference to a surge-priced Uber can be surprisingly small.

Skip the queues

US preclearance and border clearance

US immigration queues at JFK and Newark can add significant time to your journey, particularly during peak arrival times.

Pre-clear in Ireland or Canada: You can clear US customs and immigration before your transatlantic flight at Dublin, Shannon, Montreal, or Toronto. You'll arrive in New York as a domestic passenger and walk straight out. Montreal is particularly useful as it's roughly en route (adds about 2 hours) and connects onwards to LaGuardia, which is nearer to Manhattan than JFK. Toronto is slightly further out of the way.

Is it faster door-to-door from London? Not necessarily, given London's plentiful nonstops. But for travellers from elsewhere in the UK (Southampton, Bristol, etc.), it can save considerable time.

Global Entry: Wonderfully fast when you have it, but expect a slow process to obtain it. The trusted traveller programme includes TSA PreCheck and gives you access to automated kiosks at US airports.

Check recent wait times at Port Authority customs clearancecbp.gov faviconcbp.gov before you fly to plan your arrival strategy.

Great value

Flight + hotel packages

Often cheaper than booking flights alone through BA Holidaysbritishairways.com faviconbritishairways.com or Virgin Atlantic Holidaysvirginatlantic.com faviconvirginatlantic.com.

What to look for: mid-range Manhattan hotels often show the biggest savings. The websites can be clunkier to use than booking separately, but the savings can be substantial.

Downsides: hotel choice can be limited, and you won't earn hotel loyalty points or benefits. But you might save more than those points would be worth anyway.
