British Airways can charge over 60 times more for the base airfare for the same Economy class seat. Notice how all the other taxes and charges stay exactly the same?

This is also why airlines like British Airways can't sell seats for much less than £461 (there's not much airfare left to discount) and why extras often cost so much.

Carrier surcharges are flat rates by travel class for fuel (like splitting petrol money for a 10,700 mile roundtrip). Taxes like UK Air Passenger Duty and US customs fees are unavoidable too.

This shows the secret to finding cheap flights to San Francisco. It's all about reducing the base airfare to £20 each way, or as close as possible.

Airlines raise airfares from their lowest sale rates when they expect to fill their flights

Base airfares increase. Fewer highly discounted tickets are available, or they sell out quickly. Most travellers end up spending more on their tickets. But we see peak prices as the signal you just have to search a bit harder...

Flight search is a game

Some win. Most don't. Not because they don't try. But because they don't know the rules.

gb flag

Every time you book a flight from London to San Francisco, you're playing the game. 3 airlines compete on this route, each setting their own airfares and rules.

You, the plucky traveller, search your way through (probably) 50 different tabs and a headache. You never get to see these rules of the game. But you can still spend as much as a sofa for the same Economy class seat.

Double jeopardy for UK travellers: all players start on an island. Flying is the only practical way to get to San Francisco. You're playing whether you like it or not.

The secret to flight search? Search widely.

Find the fare rules that work for your trip, without paying over the odds

  • Different airlines
  • Different dates
  • Different routes
  • Different ticket types
  • Different travel sites

But don't search randomly. The strategies below will help you decode airline pricing rules for London to San Francisco. That's how you find fares in the £300-450 range consistently, even at peak times.

Book outbound and return as separate one-way tickets to fly the same flights and avoid return ticket pricing.

Best for:

  • Return trips outside of offpeak times

  • Routes where low-cost airlines operate (they typically only sell one-ways)

  • Long haul trips during peak times

  • Routes where prices differ significantly by direction

  • Mixing airlines between outbound and return flights

Why this search works

London to San Francisco is dominated by three airline alliances: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and United Airlines (who have a major hub in SFO). Each of these network airlines typically price with restricted return tickets. Thankfully, there is now healthy competition.

Customers have many one-stop options via Europe, Canada, and other US hubs, including with low cost and airlines that aren't part of BA, Virgin, or United's transatlantic joint businesses. JetBlue offers competitive one-way pricing to US customers to Europe through their Boston and New York JFK hubs.

By breaking the roundtrip into two one-way tickets, you can often access these lower airfares that aren't available in a standard roundtrip ticket.

2

Throwaway return + one-way back

The cheapest return tickets often require a longer stay over a weekend at least, then add a one-way back on your actual preferred date. Combined cost beats expensive short roundtrip pricing.

Best for:

  • Short long haul trips

  • Business travel dates (Monday-Thursday or similar)

  • When return fares appear more expensive than normal

  • Flexible travellers who can book two separate tickets

  • Routes where prices differ significantly by direction

Why this search works

This works similarly to combining two one-ways. However, the cheapest long haul flights that airlines will sell are highly restricted return tickets, typically with a Saturday night stay rule.

Airlines know business travellers won't typically stay for the weekend, but price-sensitive leisure travellers will. Business travellers also strongly prefer frequency, so United and BA maintain multiple daily flights each to keep their premium cabins full. This often means the economy cabins fly empty in the off-season, which drives down fares.

To complete the trip, you can book your separate return (typically very cheap from San Francisco to London) as the market rate is lower and there is no UK Air Passenger Duty due.

3

Stay over the weekend

Adding a Saturday night stay unlocks cheaper roundtrip airfares. Airlines know most business travellers will pay more and won't stay over the weekend, but price-sensitive leisure travellers do.

Best for:

  • Short long haul trips that could extend or combine with a visit elsewhere

  • Business travel dates (Monday-Thursday or similar)

  • Premium cabins (Business, First, Premium Economy)

  • Travellers who can buy tickets in advance

  • Flexible travellers who can add 1-2 extra nights away for a more relaxed trip

Why this search works

The cheapest airfares are typically restricted roundtrip fares. These typically require a Saturday night stay to make them unattractive to business travellers. If your trip is flexible enough to fly out the Saturday before (and de-jetlag in Golden Gate Park) or fly back the Sunday after, you can save a huge amount on your flights.

Granted, you may spend more staying a few extra nights but the difference in airfare more than offsets it. You don't have to stay in the middle of San Francisco either.

Why this search works

European hubs like Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt offer competitive connecting options to San Francisco. SAS, KLM, and Lufthansa all operate this route and often undercut the nonstop carriers.

The trade-off is connection time, but many of these connections are efficient (1-2 hours) and arrival times can be similar to the nonstop. Your bags are checked through and you're on a single ticket, so connections are protected if there are delays.

5

Self connect via Europe

Long haul flights from other European hubs can be much cheaper than UK departures due to competition, not paying UK/London rates, and avoiding UK Air Passenger Duty long haul rates. Position yourself with a cheap separate flight (could be on a low-cost airline) with plenty of time to self-connect.

Best for:

  • Long haul flights outside of offpeak times

  • Long haul flights in premium cabins (Business, First, Premium Economy)

  • Flexible travellers who can self-connect and re-check bags

  • Couples, families, or any groups where savings made are multiplied by each traveller

  • Anyone willing to give themselves 3+ hours or overnight between flights

  • 2-for-1 trips: visit another European city and save money on the way

Why this search works

European hubs like Frankfurt are home to United, Lufthansa, and other Star Alliance carriers that compete aggressively on price for long-haul routes. By positioning yourself to one of these hubs on a cheap short-haul flight, you can access these fares.

The trade-off is connection time and the need to re-check bags (since you're on separate tickets with no interline agreement). For comparison, booking the same itinerary as a single ticket via Lufthansa costs £1,631 - nearly 50% more than self-connecting. With proper planning and allowing enough connection time, the substantial savings make this strategy worthwhile for price-conscious travellers.

Why this search works

Airlines have access to hotel inventory at wholesale "bed bank" rates and can bundle flights with accommodation at prices that often undercut booking separately. British Airways Holidays and Virgin Atlantic Holidays are particularly strong for US cities like San Francisco.

The savings can be substantial, especially on mid-range hotels. You'll lose the ability to earn hotel loyalty points, but the cash savings typically outweigh this. Plus you get ATOL protection and can still collect airline miles and tier points.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

What to know before you book

Great British Take-Off
Best views

Window seat? Left hand side out, right hand side back

The final approach into SFO typically brings you in from the north with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge on the left from about 12,000ft. Pick the right side for the return for sunset & London views. So fly posh - port out, starboard home.

United has both the least and most space in Economy

All airlines have the same 31" seat pitch in Economy, but United's 777s have a denser 3-4-3 layout with less recline. But, United Economy Plus has the most space too. Book your seats carefully.

Best cabin? Book the upper deck on BA's A380

The upper deck Economy cabin on BA's A380 is 2-4-2 instead of the main deck's 3-4-3, with large side bins. Far less crowded than the dense cabins on other aircraft.

Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC) are almost as quick door-to-door

Three major airports serve the San Francisco Bay Area. Even if you're travelling into the city, they are all competitive on door-to-door times. Search all of them to find a better deal.

Swerve the Bay Area afternoon traffic

Several flights arrive or depart SFO right in the teeth of Bay Area afternoon rush hour. Careful with any direct flights leaving London around lunchtime, or returning early evening.

These 11-hour flights have larger meal offerings than other shorter transatlantic routes, but you'll still want snacks. Each airline offers something different.

Defy jetlag

Plan for the worst of jetlag the day after arrival

The 8-hour timezone difference makes day 2 much harder than day 1. Flights are long enough to avoid sleep deprivation (helps day 1 when you land), but your body clock still has to adjust. Keep in mind for your day 2 plans.

Nap on the outbound flight

Most flights take off from London when it's the middle of the night in San Francisco. A gentle nap on the 11-hour outbound flight helps counter the worst of the jetlag.

Avoid United's lunchtime flight from San Francisco to London

United's UA901 lunchtime departure lands around 7am in London — but that's still 11pm the previous day in California. A full day of fighting your body clock awaits.

Virgin's flies the last flight of the day, but they could ruin your productivity

VS41 from Heathrow and VS42 from SFO are the last nonstops of the day. You can use a full day before flying, but you can exhausted for days if you're not a smart with when you sleep.

Best views

Window seat? Left hand side out, right hand side back

Most final approaches into SFO take you in from the north, with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city on the left hand side from about 12,000ft.

Extended sunsets are visible on the left side window seats, particularly on early afternoon winter flights like BA287 and UA949. Covering 122 degrees of longitude, you can enjoy up to 10 hours of gorgeous sunset.

Most flights to San Francisco route up and over Greenland. If the cloud base is clear, you can see amazing views of fjords, glaciers, and icebergs about 3 hours after take-off — reasonably timed after a first meal and film.

If you're awake on the overnight return flights, some of these flights could offer views of the Northern Lights in the higher latitudes about midway through.

On the return flights, choose window seats on the right hand side. You get good (although not quite as good as the approach) views of the city on departure. If you're taking off in daylight, sunset will be on the right. Sunrise will be on the right too, although that can disturb the cabin more. You typically get better views of London on approach into Heathrow too.

United has both the least and most space in Economy

All airlines have the same 31" seat pitch in Economy. United's 777s all have 3-4-3 and less recline (only 3" unlike BA & Virgin's 5"). United also offer leather seats — nice on shorter flights, but less breathable and comfortable on long-haul overnight.

That said, United Economy Plus is widely available. This is an extra legroom Economy, not a separate Premium Economy cabin. 34" pitch and more recline makes it the best Economy cabin for space.

Best cabin? Book the upper deck on BA's A380

The current British Airways A380 layout has Economy split over the main and upper deck. Unlike the main deck 3-4-3 layout, the upper deck is 2-4-2 and has large side bins for storing your personal belongings (as opposed to just the overhead lockers).

Smaller cabins and easier aisle access feels far less crowded than the dense Economy cabins on other aircraft.

Three major airports serve the San Francisco Bay Area. Even if you're travelling into the city, they are all competitive on door-to-door times. Search all of them to find a better deal.

There used to be direct flights to all three airports from London, but now they are all consolidated into SFO. That said, you can connect through to any of them from other gateway hubs in the USA. If direct LHR-SFO prices are high and you're considering one-stop flights anyway, see if you can save more by searching to all the Bay Area airports.

Swerve the Bay Area afternoon traffic

The Bay Area's afternoon traffic is notorious, and several London flights land or depart right in the middle of it.

Arriving into SFO: VS19 and UA949 both land mid-afternoon. By the time you've cleared immigration and collected baggage, you'll be heading into peak traffic. The earlier morning arrivals (BA285 and UA900) get you out of the airport well before it builds up. BA287 and the later flights arrive after it eases.

Departing from SFO: VS20, UA930, and BA286 all depart in the late afternoon and evening. If you're heading to SFO from the city or the Peninsula, allow extra time or consider taking BART instead of driving. These are otherwise well-timed flights for sleep and jetlag — so the trade-off is worth it.

Alternatively, head to the airport earlier and work from the lounge. SFO has solid options in the international terminal.

Plane food

Pack snacks for the day

On these longer flights, airlines typically have a larger meal offering. These flights stretch over 11 hours (longer if you count boarding time through till after immigration), so even so — plan on snacks.

British Airways serve a second hot meal on longer flights to the USA, like to California, Arizona & Nevada (typically over 5,000 miles). This is similar to the first meal service without a starter or separate drinks service.

United have 3 services each way, with a hot meal before arrival and a warm mid-flight snack (like a sandwich), even on their overnights. This is more similar to their long transpacific flights from Heathrow.

Virgin Atlantic's service is more similar to their East Coast flights. A smaller, cold "afternoon tea" before arrival, or warm breakfast sandwich on return. Mid-flight on the outbound daylights, you also get a warm sandwich.

Remember, US customs won't let you bring fresh food items in. That includes things like fruit or sandwiches provided onboard. Save the hassle and eat onboard.

Defy jetlag

Plan for the worst of jetlag the day after arrival

Flights to San Francisco are long enough to avoid sleep deprivation. If you can rest, that makes "day 1 jetlag" easier. But the 8-hour timezone difference makes the next day much harder to adjust.

The faster return flights to London are still airborne for at least 9 hours 30 minutes. With drinks, dinner, and a breakfast service, you're likely to have at least 6 hours undisturbed to sleep.

Even if you're just resting, you're less likely to suffer true sleep deprivation on these longer overnight flights than, say, New York to London (typically less than 4 hours undisturbed).

But a more restful flight doesn't reset your body clock. That's why people often struggle with their second full day and night, after they've had a chance to sleep through in a proper bed.

Defy jetlag

Nap on the outbound flight

Most flights take off from London when you would be asleep (or just waking up) in San Francisco, and most arrival times are when you would be asleep (or going to sleep) in London.

The earliest flights like BA285 and UA900 take off from London by 11am, or 3am in San Francisco. They land by 2pm into SFO with the full afternoon ahead. But that is 10pm in London — and you should aim to stay awake.

Stretching your body's circadian rhythms far beyond a 24-hour cycle will trigger awful day 1 jetlag. You can counter this with a gentle nap on the flight out. You'll easily have time on the 11-hour outbound flights.

Defy jetlag

Avoid United's lunchtime flight from San Francisco to London

United have a lunchtime flight from San Francisco that lands around 7am. Although this gives a full day in London, 7am London time is still 11pm the previous day in California.

Your body's circadian rhythms will have had no reason to adjust, but the UK timezone means you'll need to stay awake for the full day.

If you do sleep after arrival, you'll likely be sleeping in a proper bed, much more deeply than on a plane. This is much harder to wake yourself from.

The exception is if you're on a very short trip from the UK and if you stay on (or near enough to) UK timezones. But even then, the breakfast service on this flight will be around 5:30am UK time.

Do your body clock a favour and avoid this crazy flight.

Defy jetlag

Virgin's flies the last flight of the day, but they could ruin your productivity

Virgin's VS41 from Heathrow and VS42 back from San Francisco are typically the last nonstop flights that day. You can use a full day before flying and skip heavy traffic, but there's a real risk to day 2 jetlag.

Taking off around 6pm from London and flying for 11 hours, the flight will effectively feel overnight. You'll land around 5am UK time. The risk is you rest too much on the flight, and then can't sleep through when you arrive. This creates a very long day after arrival.

Try and stay awake for most of VS41, and limit a nap to 2–3 hours at most. Aim to "land tired" and then enjoy a long lie-in in a proper bed on arrival.

On the return, VS42 leaves SFO around 11pm and arrives into London around 6pm. You may have had a full night's sleep onboard, but then only have a few hours awake before you need to go to sleep again.

You can't do this flight without sleeping, but plan to wake up with plenty of time to go. Consider dinner before you fly, sleep for the first half of the flight, then treat the second half like a dayflight "on London time". Plan to "land tired" on London time.
