British Airways can charge over 56 times more for the base airfare for the same Economy class seat. Notice how all the other taxes and charges stay exactly the same?

This is also why airlines like British Airways can't sell seats for much less than £510 (there's not much airfare left to discount) and why extras often cost so much.

Carrier surcharges are flat rates by travel class for fuel (like splitting petrol money for an 8,684 mile roundtrip). Taxes like UK Air Passenger Duty and US customs fees are unavoidable too.

This shows the secret to finding cheap flights to Orlando. It's all about reducing the base airfare to £18 each way, or as close as possible.

Airlines raise airfares from their lowest sale rates when they expect to fill their flights

Base airfares increase. Fewer highly discounted tickets are available, or they sell out quickly. Most travellers end up spending more on their tickets. But we see peak prices as the signal you just have to search a bit harder...

Flight search is a game

Some win. Most don't. Not because they don't try. But because they don't know the rules.

gb flag
us flag

Every time you book a flight from London to Orlando, you're playing the game. 3 airlines compete on this route, each setting their own airfares and rules.

You, the plucky traveller, search your way through (probably) 50 different tabs and a headache. You never get to see these rules of the game. But you can still spend as much as a sofa for the same Economy class seat.

Double jeopardy for UK travellers: all players start on an island. Flying is the only practical way to get to Orlando. You're playing whether you like it or not.

The secret to flight search? Search widely.

Find the fare rules that work for your trip, without paying over the odds

  • Different airlines
  • Different dates
  • Different routes
  • Different ticket types
  • Different travel sites

But don't search randomly. The strategies below will help you decode airline pricing rules for London to Orlando. That's how you find fares in the £300-450 range consistently, even at peak times.

Self connect via Europe

Long haul flights from other European hubs can be much cheaper than UK departures due to competition, not paying UK/London rates, and avoiding UK Air Passenger Duty long haul rates. Position yourself with a cheap separate flight (could be on a low-cost airline) with plenty of time to self-connect.

Best for:

  • Long haul flights outside of offpeak times

  • Long haul flights in premium cabins (Business, First, Premium Economy)

  • Flexible travellers who can self-connect and re-check bags

  • Couples, families, or any groups where savings made are multiplied by each traveller

  • Anyone willing to give themselves 3+ hours or overnight between flights

  • 2-for-1 trips: visit another European city and save money on the way

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

What to know before you book

Great British Take-Off
Door-to-door

Try nearby Florida airports

Orlando International (MCO) is the main gateway to the region, with the most nonstops to the UK and Europe. However, other airports within an hour's drive may be closer to your resort or final destination.

Great British Take-Off
Seatmap lottery

Best layout? Fly Virgin's A330s

Virgin Atlantic have a huge, year-round schedule of flights to Florida. Their A330s offer the most family-friendly 2-4-2 layout. This means the aisles are more accessible from each seat.

Great British Take-Off
Defy jetlag

Avoid the early flights on the return

The earliest flights returning to the UK land around 6am in the morning, or 1am Florida time. The cabin lights and breakfast noise will mean you'll be awake from around midnight Florida time — the perfect recipe for day 1 jetlag.

Great British Take-Off
Faster door-to-door

Avoid the peak afternoon traffic on your return

Traffic on the I-4 and SR-528 peaks around 4–7pm, particularly Fridays as commuter traffic merges with weekend tourists. Expect heavier traffic on the way back to the airport, unless you fly on one of the much earlier or later flights.

Great British Take-Off
Best value

Prices surge in school holidays

Demand jumps when school's out, but the airlines typically don't "surge" capacity on the route during these times. This makes Florida flights expensive during these peak weeks.

Great British Take-Off
Faster door-to-door

Avoid connecting in Texas

If you do connect, look carefully at which connecting airports are offered. Some options may be much further for the same price. Texas is further from the UK than Florida.

Great British Take-Off
Faster door-to-door

Self-connect to nonstops from Europe

Orlando is well served from other airports across the UK & Europe. Try searching from all your nearby airports, or mix-and-match route combinations to find better timed flights and lower prices.

Door-to-door

Try nearby Florida airports

Orlando International (MCO) is definitely the main gateway to the region, and it has the most nonstops to the UK and Europe. However, there are other airports within an hour's drive that may also be closer to your resort or final destination.

Tampa is a major airport with direct flights to Gatwick and Heathrow on BA and Virgin. Sitting on the Gulf coast with beaches like Clearwater and St Pete nearby, Tampa may be much closer to resorts with the best beaches. The major parks are just an hour's drive away.

Melbourne (not to be confused with Melbourne in Australia) sits on the Eastern side. TUI fly here from all over the UK to fill up their cruise ships sailing to the Caribbean.

You may also find some regional airport options in Central Florida's I-4 corridor that offer cheaper connections and quieter transfers, but you will need to connect somewhere in the US.

Seatmap lottery

Best layout? Fly Virgin's A330s

Virgin Atlantic have a huge, year-round schedule of flights to Florida. Their A330s offer the most family-friendly 2-4-2 layout. This means the aisles are more accessible from each seat. It is more likely you can sit together without a stranger seat neighbour, compared to the 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 layouts on other aircraft.

Defy jetlag

Avoid the early flights on the return

Florida is five hours behind the UK. The earliest flights returning to the UK land around 6am in the morning, or 1am Florida time. The cabin lights and breakfast noise will mean you'll be awake from around midnight Florida time.

Worse, the earliest flights take off late afternoon. You may not be ready to fall asleep, particularly if your day is on a relaxed holiday schedule (breakfast, check-out and chill).

Together, these can induce severe sleep deprivation — the perfect recipe for day 1 jetlag.

Some prefer these earlier flights to avoid losing another day of work, but that's often a false economy. You'll be fighting the temptation to sleep deeply all day long. An easy way to undo your relaxed holiday mood.

By comparison, the later flights take off nearer your normal bedtime in Florida, and land nearer your new normal bedtime in the UK. It is much easier to re-adjust to the new timezone, and you can enjoy a full day in the sun that you've already paid for.

Faster door-to-door

Avoid the peak afternoon traffic on your return

Traffic on the I-4 and SR-528 peaks around 4–7pm, particularly Fridays as commuter traffic merges with weekend tourists. Flights back to the UK are typically in the afternoon and evening.

Expect heavier traffic on the way back to the airport, unless you fly on one of the much earlier or later flights. We'd recommend later to maximise your last day in Florida, and make jetlag adjustment much easier.

Best value

Prices surge in school holidays

Demand jumps when school's out, but the airlines typically don't "surge" capacity on the route during these times. This makes Florida flights expensive during these peak weeks.

To get around this, look at alternative routes (like connecting to nearby regional airports), book ahead earlier (before cheaper tickets sell out), and consider package holidays where you can book with a deposit and pay later.

Avoid connecting in Texas

If you do connect, look carefully at which connecting airports are offered. Some options may be much further for the same price.

Airports on the East Coast like New York JFK and Boston are almost on the same great circle route. You don't add very few extra miles.

Many connections might route through airports like Atlanta (Delta/Virgin) and Charlotte (BA/American) that involve only a slight detour.

Some common connections include Dallas (BA/American) and Houston. These megahubs may be a good price, but they are a significant detour. Texas is further from the UK than Florida. A 10 hour 30 minute flight, followed by a 2 hour connection and another 2 hour 30 minute flight means these flights are about 33% further and 50% more travel time than the nonstops. That's time you could spend better by the pool.
